Your 4-year-old child may be eligible to attend free preschool

NC Pre-K is a statewide initiative to provide a high quality pre-kindergarten experience for at-risk 4 year olds to prepare them to enter school the following year.  It is a full-day (6.5 hours) program, Monday – Friday, following the Stokes County School system’s calendar year.

 

Stokes Partnership for Children administers the NC Pre-K program. This means that all applications for NC Pre-K are processed and eligibility determined at Stokes Partnership for Children. Classrooms are located in the public schools, Head Start, and private child care centers.

Families can now apply online using a computer, tablet or smartphone using the link below. We also accept paper applications, which families can download (PDF fillable version below) and complete. Families may also request an application be mailed to them. Age Requirements

1.    A child must turn 4 years old on or before August 31st of the program year.
2.    Children who are age eligible for kindergarten cannot be served with NCPK funds. 

 

Income Requirements

A child that meets the age requirements is eligible for NC Pre-K if the child is from a family whose gross income is at or below 75% of the State Median Income level.
 

Other ways a child may qualify include

  • Child (family size of 8 or less) is receiving Public Assistance

  • WIC

  • Public Housing

  • TANF/Work First

  • Medicaid

  • SSI

  • Food and Nutrition Services (Food Stamps)

  • SNAP

  • Child of eligible military families;

  • Child whose family is experiencing homelessness;

  • Child with an identified disability or developmental/educational need;

  • Child with limited English-speaking skills;

  • Child living in foster care, kinship care or with a legal guardian;

  • Child receiving refugee services;

  • Child with a diagnosed chronic health condition, documented as having the potential to interfere with the child’s development and learning as determined by a health care professional.

Required Documents

  1. Completed/Signed Application

  2. Verification of birth (Birth Certificate, Medical Records, Immunization Record)

  3. Verification of gross annual household income (tax form 1040 or W-2 or 4 consecutive paystubs, Social Security benefits, Child Support, etc.)
    OR
    Verification of Public Assistance (WIC, Medicaid, Food Stamps, Public Housing, TANF/Work First, SSI, SNAP)

  4. Verification of Residency (Copy of utility bill, rental agreement, drivers license, etc.)

  5. Documentation of custody/guardianship if child does not live with biological parent

  6. Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or Section 504 plan if applicable

If your child is enrolled you must submit a recent health assessment (exam in past 12 months) including dental, vision, and hearing screenings completed and signed by your child's medical provider. See printable forms in the section below.

  • Upload files after submitting the application - You will receive an email with your application responses and a link to return to the application to make edits. When you visit this link, you will be able to return to your child's application and upload the documents at the end of the form.

  • Mail documents to Stokes Partnership for Children - PO Box 2319, King, NC 27021

  • Drop off documents in the locked dropbox outside the Stokes Partnership for Children office at 151 Jefferson Church Rd, Suite 104, King, NC.

*Applications will not be complete until all required documentation is received.*

 

Although applications will continue to be accepted, the first deadline for eligibility and placement determination will be May 14th.
